Union on left, Confederates on right

Victory for the Union after Confederates lost their cavalry (on right) unit to artillery fire

OoB: Union and Confederates each have 2 units infantry, 1 unit of Cavalry & 1 unit of Artillery.

Unit activation was using a deck of Risk(tm) cards. Rules were latest edition of WARG rules.

Gettysburg, day 3, southern end of the "fish hook" - hypothetical

What if... Lt. General Longstreet supported Pickett's Charge with an attack at the southern end of the "fish hook" on Cemetery Ridge ?  Let's find out using an adapted version of  Bob Cordery's "Portable Wargame" system without the squares.   Please click on the photos to enlarge.

Units involved are: Maj. Gen. David Bell Birney, who just assumed command of the 3rd Corps, and his 1st division supported by several artillery batteries.
4 brigades (Lang, Wilcox, Wright and Mahone) from Anderson's 1st division, 3rd Corps (A.P. Hill) assisting Maj. Gen. Lafayette McLaws and his 2nd division of Longstreet's 1st Corps.

Stepping off ...

Stirring music and the sound of cannon

More stirring music and more cannon fire

Stirring music, musket & rifle fire and the constant roar of the cannon

Poor dice rolls in close combat dooms the Confederate assault on Cemetery Ridge.
The PA 114th holds.

Maj. Gen. McLaws was severely wounded by cannon fire in early action. The Union barely held on for the slimmest of victories.

A fun time at the Wednesday Afternoon Retired Gamers (WARG) get together.

Race to the Potomac

Playtesting Rick's Simple rules with a brigade size scenario based on the insurgents retreat from Gettysburg with the very generous donation of goods from the farmers of central Pennsylvania.

Union deployment
The Confederacy

Dismounted cavalry fire on each other on the flank
Confederate brigade supply train is turned back from their effort to reach the Potomac.

Rules need some fine tuning and the scenario needs additional work. But, a very enjoyable evening !

Will be using playing card activation next time, as all that rain and mud caused a lot of Regimental failure to activate.

"The place of peace" in the "Hornet's Nest"

Tonight's game was Day 1 Shiloh using Battle Cry 150.

Early action on the Confederacy's right flank
The "Rebs" entrenched in the center, but feel the wrath of the Battlecry card.
A loss of generals and the Confederacy at Shiloh

An enjoyable evening spent with a Richard Borg design.  Unfortunately, with the high prices from speculators in the game marketplace, fewer and fewer folks will have the opportunity to play this  type of game.

Next up, my new Samurai paper armies.  Cost under $10.00

November DBA-HX-ACW

Cannons on hills, crossroads, split rail fence, blue and gray ....
